Farewell, Mark

Mark Tomasic performed as Speed Racer in Verb Ballets' "Heroes," but two days of al fresco dancing will form a fond farewell to Tomasic, a senior dancer with the troupe. Tomasic, who has also performed with Dancing Wheels, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Tom Evert Dance Company, the Cleveland San Jose Ballet and Ballet Contemporaneo de Buenos Aires, is the second prominent openly gay dancer and choreographer to leave Ohio this year.

Michael Medcalf, the founder and artistic director of Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theater, is heading to Washington, D.C. for an internship, and then most likely to California to continue his education.

Tomasic will also be westward bound, moving to San Francisco to be with his boyfriend. Before he goes, however, Verb will present four family-friendly pieces on Friday and Saturday, August 24 and 25 in the Tremont neighborhood's Lincoln Park. Both shows are at 8 pm, and audience members are encouraged to arrive early and bring lawn chairs or blankets on which to sit.

The evening includes Tomasic soloing to artistic director Hernando Cortez' choreography in "Darkwood," set to the moody cello music of David Darling.

Cortez' "Planet Soup," a collection of songs from artists across the globe, will also be performed, along with the Heinz Boll-choreographed ballet of Ravel's “Bolero.” Rounding out the night will be a reflection of Cortez' lighter side with "Polka Madness," set to the songs of Frankie Yankovic. The music will be performed by Johnny Koenig and his band.

Admission to the park is free, and there is a rain date of Sunday, August 26. For more information about the shows or Tomasic, go to www.verbballets.org.
